An idiom is a group of words, or in other words, a phrase that has a meaning different from the literal meaning of the words in it.

Meaning:
to be ruined while one is working on it (a plan or project etc.), to explode suddenly
Example:
The secret plan blew up in our face when we discovered that everybody already knew about it. The bomb blew up in the man's face.
