Idioms are phrases which cannot be understood simply by looking at the meaning of the individual words in the phrase.


Idiom:
rub salt in (someone's) wound

Meaning:
to deliberately make someone's unhappiness or shame or misfortune worse

Example:
My supervisor rubbed salt in my wound when he continued to criticize me for my mistake.
