A group of words which have a different meaning when used together from the one they would have if you took the meaning of each word separately.


Idiom:
take the starch out of (someone)

Meaning:
to make someone less arrogant, to make someone tired and weak

Example:
The criticism by the teacher took the starch out of the girl who thought that she was the best in the class.
