A group of words which have a different meaning when used together from the one they would have if you took the meaning of each word separately.


Idiom:
You can't please everyone.

Meaning:
it is not possible to make everyone happy

Example:
You can't please everyone and somebody in the class was always unhappy with what the teacher chose to do.
