A phrase that consists of a verb with a preposition or adverb or both, the meaning of which is different from the meaning of its separate parts.


Phrasal Verb:
sweep something under the carpet

Meaning / Example:

1. to hide dirt by brushing it away under the edge of a carpet.
> He was in such a hurry with the cleaning that he just swept the dirt under the carpet.

2. to hide or ignore something.
> You made a mistake that you can't sweep under the carpet.
