Phrasal Verb


A phrase that combines a verb with a preposition or adverb or both and that functions as a verb whose meaning is different from the combined meanings of the individual words.


Phrasal Verb:
jerk something up

Meaning / Example:

1. to pull something up quickly.
> He jerked his belt up tight.

2. to lift up something, such as ears, quickly.
> The dog jerked its ears up.
> The dog jerked up its ears when it heard the floor creak.
