Phrasal Verb


A phrase that combines a verb with a preposition or adverb or both and that functions as a verb whose meaning is different from the combined meanings of the individual words.

Meaning / Example:

1. [for something] to continue rolling.
> The cart came rolling down the hill and rolled on for a few yards at the bottom.

2. [for something] to be applied by rolling.
> This kind of deodorant just rolls on.
> She rolled on too much paint and it dripped from the ceiling.

3. [for something, such as time] to move on slowly and evenly, as if rolling.
> The years rolled on, one by one.
